Description

Gloucester Road Underground Station is served by the District, Circle and Piccadilly Lines. During the 1970’s the Eastbound Circle Line platform was taken out of use. This now provides one of the venues for TfL’s “Art on the Underground” initiative.

For TfL’s 12th Art Commission at Gloucester Road, international artist Sarah Morris was commissioned to develop her official London 2012 Paralympics poster, Big Ben (2012). Spanning eighteen arches across the entire length of the disused platform, her paintings are a direct response to the architecture of the station and the City of London.

We were approached by TfL’s “Art on the Underground” team to provide a solution to light up the artwork placed within the Platform Arches at Gloucester Road.

We inspected and tested the lighting circuits and made the necessary minor repairs. The light fittings were removed, cleaned, tested and the lamps replaced. The Giffen team installed the display lighting with the Lighting Designer and to the Artist’s approval. The end result is spectacular and the Art Display will be seen by the increased volume of visitors to the City during the Olympic period.
